A modern beginner’s bassoon is generally made of maple, with medium-hardness types such as sycamore maple and sugar maple preferred. We sell new and some used student and professional instruments. Tenon is original with nickel-silver tenon-cap. Haynes #17,99x (late 1945), hand-made plateau C foot, soldered tone-holes. There are other manufacturers, some in business for many years, in Europe, the United States, Japan and China who openly copy the Heckel system as standard. You would want to buy wood from the stock of a musical instrument maker if you can afford it. The added flutes and clarinets reappear in the finale as little more than filler for tutti passages.

The modern Buffet system has 22 keys with its range being about the same as the Heckel. Long joint also wears new lacquer finish and new nickel plate to the keywork. Composers came from all over Europe to train in and around Vienna, and gradually they developed and formalized the standard musical forms that were to predominate European musical culture for the next several decades. All parts are original with no re-soldering anywhere. All pad spuds and washers are Boston style, probably from Haynes, the case is late 20th century; not original.

The earliest known written instructions date from the middle of the seventeenth century, describing the reed as being held together by wire or resined thread; the earliest actual reeds that survive are more than a century younger, a collection of 21 reeds from the late eighteenth century Spanish bajon. We are grateful to the Philharmonia orchestra's Sound Exchange for many of the sound samples in the notes sections of the C:T sound bank Superb original condition, good original case. A loud syncopated accent from the rest of the orchestra on the “dissonant” note, again notated as A-sharp, finally interprets the harmony underneath it as a “German sixth” chord, which leads to the “dominant” chord of E minor, then strongly resolves there.

Hall of Fame The Heckel company, founded in 1831 in Wiesbaden, Germany, is undoubtedly one of the oldest bassoon construction workshops. Pitched in C (an octave below the oboe), the bassoon is the largest of the double reed instruments. But none of those should include thuds or thumps (unless, I suppose, called for by the composer). It wears new pads and corks from our shop in Wichita. $1500 C. The German system is also called the Heckel system and is widely used worldwide.
