It is one of the three ways, along with convergence and transform motion, that plates interact. An alternative explanation, though, was that the continents had moved (shifted and rotated) relative to the north pole, and each continent, in fact, shows its own "polar wander path". There are also several historic sites on the Caribbean Plate that are not included in this list. Beloussov (1980, 1990) held that plate tectonics was a premature generalization of still very inadequate data on the structure of the ocean floor, and had proven to be far removed from geological reality. This extension is usually localized to the backarc, the heat-softened magmatic belt just behind (inland of) the volcanic front.
