The two long acts with only a very short interval were too much for people to concentrate on and it wasn't until later, when it was split into three acts that this opera was fully accepted and appreciated. The last of the great line of Italian repertoire opera composers was fully named Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini (II), of a line of composers who had long been active in Lucca, Italy. Though loosely associated with the verismo movement, which strove to create more natural and believable opera theatre, Puccini did not hesitate to write period pieces or to exploit exotic locales.

Puccini clearly considered his Masks a key element, giving their solo turns nearly one-sixth of the entire running time of the opera with, as Carner notes, distinctive music of skipping intervals, jerky rhythms and dry orchestration that invokes puppets on strings. Puccini got a diploma from the Pacini School of Music in Lucca in 1880, having studied there with his uncle Fortunato, and later with Carlo Angeloni, who had also instructed Alfredo Catalani. Following the success of his first opera, Puccini rushed home to be with his ailing mother, who died shortly thereafter on July 17, 1884.
