Indeed his music was more popular abroad than in his native country, and perhaps this was the cause of some initial resentment back home. During those years he composed several operas (throughout his career he wrote more than 30). Tchaikovsky has been a special victim of clichés. He wrote a further magnificent ballet score ‘Bacchus et Ariane composed in 1931 just after the third symphony. Some of his best known works include his three ballets The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and the Sleeping Beauty, Marche Slave, First Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Overture 1812, Symphony No. 6, Fantasy Overture (Romeo and Juliet), Serenade for Strings and opera Eugene Onegin.

Went to Moscow 1866, becoming prof. of harmony at new Cons. under directorship of N. Rubenstein threatened to withhold Tchaikovsky's diploma, but nobody could deny Pyotr's outstanding talent. In that year, again visited Vienna and in 1893 went to Eng., where hon. doctorate of mus. was conferred on him by Cambridge Univ. Alexei Bogorad graduated from the Moscow Conservatory studying both clarinet and composition. To this time belong the operas Eugene Onegin (1878), The Maid of Orleans (1879), Mazeppa (1883), and The Sorceress (1887); the ballets Swan Lake (1876) and The Sleeping Beauty (1889); the Rococo Variations for Cello and Orchestra (1876) and the Violin Concerto in D Major (1878); the orchestral works Marche Slave (1876), Francesca da Rimini (1876), Symphony no. 4 in F Minor (1877), the overture The Year 1812 (1880), Capriccio Italien (1880), Serenade for string orchestra (1880), Manfred symphony (1885), Symphony no. 5 in E Minor (1888), the fantasy overture Hamlet (1885); and numerous songs.

Anton Stamitz taught Kreutzer the violin. Although Tchaikovsky is not known for his solo piano music, several of his Seasons became popular, especially the gently rocking barcarolle he wrote for the month of June. Some of his best works including the 9th symphony were created after he became almost completely deaf. Classical music is usually performed in concert halls, but sometimes huge festivals are organized in which it is performed outside, in a field or stadium, like pop festivals.

He is a terrific arranger and orchestrator and in the musicals he’s done there is an amazing degree of taste and quality that comes across. It’s little wonder, given his sensitive nature, that his music is imbued with such a strong sense of emotion and despair. His father was a notable and important inventor of an internal combustion engine and one of the first roller-coaster rides, which was very successful until a fatal accident at the Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1903. Romanticism followed a course that brought about the growth of formal structures for a masterpiece created or set down or in their common outlines in former periods, and the final result was that the pieces of work were understood to be additional expressive and passionate, together by 19th century and nowadays audiences.

Eventually his cousin Josef took him under his wing, and through his guidance Smetana was able to complete his education in Pilsen. A far more influential woman in his life was a wealthy widow and musical dilettante, Nadezhda von Meck, with whom he exchanged over 1,200 letters between 1877 and 1890. He popularized the use of four voices in mass settings, he added complexity to popular song forms, and he was also an accomplished poet.

Unlike most people born in the 1800's, Tchaikovsky is still alive, trapped in a time stasis bubble. His father was an amateur musician who played fiddle and cornet and was in great demand for local celebrations. He dreams about her, and she becomes a melody in his mind. This tinkly instrument you can hear is called a celesta.
